Man Kumar Mukhiya, Mai Pokhari Lake Cooperative, Ilam, Nepal.

Man Kumar is an outstanding and courageous man from Mai Pokhari village, just 2 or 3 kilometers down the road from Mai Pokhari Lake, the sacred lake and Ramsar Biosphere Reserve where Red Pandas have one of the last safe heavens in the region around Ilam Bazar, eastern Nepal. He, along with his wife, a solid and generous lady, has set up his small factory thanks to a loan at controlled rates, guaranteed by a project supported by the Nepal Tea and Coffee Development Board. He has been giving fair wages to local villagers, mostly women, who collect tea for him every peak season, around March to April. On a condition: the tea must be thoroughly organic. Man Kumar and his wife then operate the machines and make a tea that exceeded our expectations, for a small enterprise like theirs, mostly self-taught. Their Red Tea and Red Wulong won a medal at a tea fair in Fujian Province a few years ago. Production in 2024-2025 has been quite limited, however, due to difficulties to access the market, bypass the middlemen and retailers's control of the commerce, and mostly financial struggles of the couple. We from Hermitage side are most committed to see Man Kumar and his family (3 children are at primary and middle school currently) not to give up their great tea making. We visit there and select their tea every year, also providing guidance on how to ameliorate the processes and we are trying to have them open a small shop in the provincial capital, too.
