This tea, primitive, with a pinch of fresh vegetable on the top, redolent with brown sugar and ginger, is grown by Man Kumar Mukhiya, a young and brave tea farmer and master, who started from nothing to build his own factory, aided by his family, children, and wonderful vulcanic wife. He is indebted with predatory microcredit institutions, and we appreciate his teas, whose primitiveness and freshness and salty texture are indeed a surprise. Last January, he came all the way to his factory to meet me, a pilgrim doing fieldwork in Ilam for two weeks, from the Terai plains, 5 hours by car along trechearous roads. We sat down and had a lovely meal and conversation in my broken nepali and his broken english. He is a good friend and one of the most creative tea producers I know in Ilam, considering where he is coming from and with what resources he has begun his journey.
